LEARN TO SAIL

On the Water Learning Experience

We at Cherokee Lake Sailing Club would like to share our beloved sailing sport with you. We would like to offer an opportunity for you to join us and see what being aboard a boat propelling a boat through the water with a gentle breeze is all about. On Thursday nights a group of our members meet at the CLCS pavilion at about 5:15PM. The pavilion is located in Black Oak Marina, right down the dock from Off The Hook restaurant. We are offering you an on-water experience for you to see what sailing is all about.

If you would like to join us, you can contact us at the number below or just show up around 5:15PM on Thursdays and let someone know that you are interested in sailing. We welcome the opportunity to share our sport with you!

Learn to sail at Cherokee Lake

When people think about sailboats, their minds jump to tropical, Caribbean locations with crystal blue water and coconut trees. Perhaps some think of pirate voyages on the high seas. However, few people are aware that some of the best sailing within a 100-mile radius of our area is right in our backdoor. In addition, there is a sailing club located in Jefferson City, TN that is celebrating the 45th year of its club’s existence.

Cherokee Lake Sailing Club was established in 1977. Long before Off the Hook Restaurant was serving up good food and great music at Black Oak Marina, there was a building on that spot that housed the sailing club. After a fire consumed the old clubhouse, the sailing club was relocated to a floating dock at the head of the sailboat piers, but that hasn’t kept the club from flourishing.

Black Oak Marina currently houses nearly 40 sailboats, If you are ever down wandering the docks, you are certain to run into a friendly sailor generally only too happy to talk boats or show off theirs. With nearly 30 current members, you’ll likely come upon someone who can regale you with stories of the most recent race that the club has put on. Perhaps you’ll even catch them out on the lake for a “raft up” event, in which all the boats anchor and tie off together for a weekend a camping and cruising aboard. This friendly lot is always ready to chat and bring others interested in their passion into the fold.

For anyone looking to take a dip in the local sailing culture or who would like more information about Cherokee Lake Sailing Club or sailing in general, the club’s Facebook page is a great spot for information. The club has plans for several clinics teaching everything from knots to sailing theory coming up in the near future. Additionally, there are frequent opportunities posted for people to help “crew” during races on boats that may be shorthanded. Next time you see a sail flying on Cherokee Lake, stop by and say hi! Members include former Olympic sailors to complete novices who have recently fell in love with the sport. Who knows? Maybe your ocean-going adventures will begin right here in your own landlocked backyard.

Helpful Apps on the Water!!

Here we are enjoying the wind, the water, and our love for sailing. It could not get any better than that. But then we throw in our racing component as well as safety on the waters, and hence we become faced with technology. Of course, technology has brought us improved sail materials, cuts of sails, and devices in boat design to improve our performance. On the race course, there are apps which will definitely improve your efficiency in boat performance and your knowledge on the water. An app is simply a software package that allows users to perform specific tasks on a mobile or tablet device. We download these to help with everyday life experiences, so why not consider how these might help your performance on the lake. Let us examine some of these that could aid us in our boat performance.

“GREAT EXPERIENCE!”

Cherokee Lake Sailing Club is so much fun – whether participating in our racing program, going out for casual cruises or just gathering at the club pavilion for dock parties with a fun group of folks.

“WELCOMING NEW MEMBERS!”

We would love to share our beloved sailing sport with you.  Come visit at the dock & see what sailing is all about!

“SO BEAUTIFUL!”

Cherokee Lake is the premier location in East Tennessee for a day of sailing. It is the pristine lake due to its width that enables a sailor to take advantage of various points of sail.

There is currently dock space through Black Oak Marina if you are interested in a berth for your boat. We gather at our club pavilion for club events, as well as holding activities at Off The Hook Restaurant located in the marina.
